This is the story of one of the 2023 recipients.

The scholarship money I was awarded helped me attend the Middle School Honors Performance Series to sing at Carnegie Hall with the choir as a Soprano. This was a life-changing experience! First, I had the opportunity to meet and sing with so many talented singers from all over the world, in the most exciting place in the United States, New York City (center of the universe). Second, the scholarship money helped me to purchase food. Our chaperone took us to various places to eat after rehearsal and that was fun to explore the city with my new friends. We really enjoyed eating bagels from Liberty Bagels, right on 35th Street. This bagel shop is famous and was right by our hotel, The New Yorker. In addition, we got to see a Broadway show, which was exciting since we were also budding singers. It was such a great feeling knowing that all of my rehearsal time at home that was done prior to leaving for NYC paid off when I met the conductor, Dr. Jeffrey Ames. We all came together as strangers, but we all knew the same songs to perform and could learn the details and how to execute them when we rehearsed with Dr. Ames. Music is truly magic and it is great to know that singing and music can bring us all together to find a common purpose. Thank you so much for the scholarship, it helped me relax knowing that I had money to help me navigate the city. I am thankful I was given this opportunity, which will stay with me forever.

Thank you,

Sophia Reyes
