Legislative Update

House Speaker Dustin Burrows released the committee assignments for the 89th LegislatureRep Buckley (R), Salado, was reappointed to serve as the Chairman of House Public Education, and Diego Bernal (D), San Antonio, will serve as Vice Chair. 
House Speaker Dustin Burrows released the committee assignments for the 89th LegislatureRep Buckley (R), Salado, was reappointed to serve as the Chairman of House Public Education, and Diego Bernal (D), San Antonio, will serve as Vice Chair. They created a new permanent subcommittee on Academic and Career-Oriented Education that will be led by Trent Ashby (R), LufkinDennis Bonnen (R), Friendswood, was reappointed to serve on the House Committee on Appropriations. Public Education has not posted for their organizational meeting. House Appropriations held their first two meetings this week. They will appoint the article subcommittees very soon. 

Chairman Buckley filed HB3 which is the House version of the Education Savings Account bill. The House's version takes a slightly different approach and increases the basic allotment by a couple hundred dollars.

  • HB 3 (Buckley): Relating to the establishment of an education savings account program.
  • HCR 64 (Curry): Designating the first full week in April as Gifted and Talented Students Week for a 10-year period ending in 2035.
  • HB 977 (Noble): Relating to eligibility for the gifted and talented student allotment under the Foundation School Program.
  • SB 2 (Creighton): Relating to the establishment of an education savings account program.
