The bill filing deadline in the House and Senate was last Friday. The legislature filed about 800 bills on the deadline bringing the grand total of 8,904 bills, 5,796 of which are House Bills. So far, 362 of those bills have been referred to the House Public Education Committee. The Senate filed 3,108 bills and of those 288 have been referred to the K-16 Senate Education Committee. Both chambers are still referring bills to committees so it will be a while before we know the grand total for the respective education committees.

The Texas Senate has been meeting on the floor and passing bills. 49 bills have been sent to the House. They will debate the Senate version of the General Appropriations Act on the floor next week. If you would like to tune in and watch the floor debate you can visit the News and Media tab on the Senate website.

The Texas House Committees are actively hearing bills and conducting business. Currently, no bills are in the Calendars Committee awaiting placement on a House floor calendar.

HCR 64 (Curry) designating the first week of April as G/T Week for 10 years has been referred to the Subcommittee on Academic and Career-Oriented Education and awaiting a hearing. Representative Trent Ashby serves as the chair of this subcommittee. The Senate companion, SCR 23 (Parker), was referred to the Senate Administration. HB 977 (Noble) and SB 1613 (Johnson) are the measures that would increase the G/T cap from 5% to 10% have both been referred to their respective committees and are awaiting a hearing.
