Legislative Update
Big news out of the House! HCR 64 (Curry) was heard in the Subcommittee on Academic and Career-Oriented Education. We are one step closer to ensuring that the first week of April is designated as G/T week for 10 years. The next step is for the House Public Education Committee to vote the bill out. From there, one of the Calendars committees would set it for a floor calendar where it would be heard by the House and ultimately (hopefully!) passed over to the Senate. Speaking of floor calendars, the House has set two calendars for Tuesday and Wednesday. To watch floor business, you can visit the Live Broadcast tab on the Texas House website.

On Tuesday, the Senate passed its version of the budget (SB 1) and sent it to the House. There was very little debate, and there were no amendments. House Appropriations is holding hearings on SB 1 (Huffman) and HB 500 (Bonnen). These two bills make up the finance package for this session.
HB 977 (Noble) and SB 1613 (Johnson), the bills relating to eligibility for the gifted and talented student allotment under the Foundation School Program, would increase the cap from 5% to 10% and are both sitting in committee awaiting a hearing. SCR 23 (Parker) is in the Senate Committee on Administration awaiting a hearing. At this time, the House version has a head start and could meet its companion over in the Senate.
