This week at the Texas Legislature was a busy one. The Texas House had its first two floor calendars and passed measures relating to honey, fireworks, and emergency transport by a firefighter. The Senate Education Committee heard the Teacher Pay Raise Bill as well as the Education Savings Account Bill. The Senate also passed its version of the Property Tax Relief Bill. Both SB 8 (Creighton), which will create the Education Savings Account, and SB 9 (Creighton), which will increase teacher pay, are headed to the floor of the Senate. The House and Senate Education Committees met until very late in the night hearing their version of a bill that would restrict books in libraries on school campuses. This drew a lot of public testimony. Deadlines are approaching and each Committee's agenda continues to get longer. We are about 5 weeks from the first big House committee deadline, May 8 is the last day for House Committees to report bills out of committee. The full list of important deadlines can be found here. The House has set the General Appropriations Act (budget) on the calendar for Thursday. To watch the floor debate, click here. Other bills that relate to G/T Education: Rep. Bucy filed HB 3759, which relates to a universal screening process for a school district's gifted and talented student program. Senator Creighton and Rep. Frank filed SB/8HB 5161, which relates to public education, including parental rights and public school responsibilities regarding instructional materials and the establishment of an education savings account program. |
