TAGT Book Study Series:
Culturally Responsive Teaching & Serving Diverse Populations in Gifted Education

Pricing: $299/Members; $399/Non-Members (book is included and will be shipped to you in August)

This study is ideal for those who lead and make decisions that effect gifted education programs or who work directly with gifted students.

What is culturally responsive teaching?

The path to cultural competency is a journey; one that none of us completes. What we must do is grow and develop so that we best meet the needs of our diverse gifted student populations. Using a systematic book study approach, educators will be empowered to reflect on their own journey of self-discovery related to implicit bias and how these can affect the learning environment in their schools. In this 4-part, author lead study, we will focus on strategies for building culturally competent leadership skills; ways to ensure that our identification practices are reflective of the diverse students we serve; and how we can build a culture of respect for all students, particularly those who have been traditionally othered within our system of education.

Registration includes:

  • A copy of Culturally Responsive Teaching in Gifted Education by C. Matthew Fugate, Wendy A. Behrens, Cecelia Boswell, and Joy Lawson Davis
  • Four virtual learning sessions (All sessions will take place online in Zoom, but the final session at giftED23 will be hybrid online and in-person for the book study registrants who are attending giftED23) covering topics such as best practices in multicultural teaching, gifted identification in underrepresented populations, and creating safe learning environments.
  • Coaching and feedback about current practices and future goals
  • Personalized handouts and reflection guides

Module 1: Thursday, September 7, 2023, 4:00-5:30pm
Culturally Responsive Practices
Readings: Essays 1-4
In this module we will explore what it means to create a culturally responsive environment in our schools that recognizes and celebrates the unique stories that each of our students bring to their learning and how we can prepare to reflect on our own values, beliefs, and goals.

Module 2: Thursday, October 5, 2023, 4:00-5:30pm
Race, Ethnicity, and Culture
Readings: Essays 5-8
This module will examine populations with gifted potential, talent, and achievement who have for far too long been underrepresented, underidentified, and underserved.  We will reflect on what multicultural education looks like so that we are preparing our students for the diverse world in which they live.

Gender, Sex, and Sense of Self

Here we will examine themes of unconditional acceptance, advocacy, and opportunity for students regardless of gender or sexual identity.  We will discuss ways in which we can create and sustain safe and productive environments that allow all students to thrive.

Module 4: Thursday, November 30, 2023, 4:00-5:30pm
A Call to Action
Readings: A Call to Action and Concluding Thoughts
Offered as a hybrid session during giftED23, this module will focus on what we can do to find and develop the gifts of the exceptional and diverse groups of students that we serve through the lenses of professional learning, equitible access, culturally responsive curriculum and instruction, research, family and community partnerships, and in policy.
